Shopify CSV update-import checklist

Use this before importing an update CSV where an existing product might be matched by its handle. It is a short structural review, not an import simulator or a replacement for Shopify’s current documentation.

The update risk to check first

With Shopify’s overwrite option, a blank value in an included non-required column can replace the existing value with blank. A column that is omitted behaves differently: its current value remains. Review the selected columns and their blank cells before approving an overwrite import.

Four checks before upload

  1. Keep the matching fields. For an update CSV, Shopify documents Handle and Title as required columns. Confirm the handles refer to the intended products.
  2. Compare included columns with the intended change. If a column is included only because it came from an export, inspect its blank cells. Remove an optional column only when Shopify’s documented dependency rules permit it and you do not intend to change it.
  3. Protect variants. Shopify documents dependencies between variant-related columns. Removing option columns while including data that depends on them can delete or alter variant data; changing option values can create new variant IDs.
  4. Review image rows by handle. Additional image rows can share a handle. Each image source needs to be publicly reachable, and image rows should be checked alongside the primary product row.

Make the review repeatable

Run the free local Shopify CSV preflight with Update existing products selected. It highlights blank included fields for review, repeated handle groups, non-web image URLs, and likely blank variant values. The file remains in your browser; the tool does not sign in, upload, modify, or import anything.

For an offline workflow with annotated examples and a field-by-field worksheet, use the $9 implementation kit. For a bounded manual structural review of one non-sensitive proposed file, use Review + kit.
